Silk has been used for thousands of years and is still regarded as one of the most valuable and luxurious fabrics. Even after all these years, little has changed in the production of silk.

Despite advancements in production method technologies, silk production remains a labor-intensive and time-consuming process.

What is the composition of silk?

While many different types of insects are now used to produce silk, the most commonly used species is the larvae of 'Bombyx mori' - (the caterpillar of the domestic silkmoth). These amazing silkworms produce one of the most sought-after materials, with a plethora of excellent properties.

Silk is lustrous and lightweight, but it's also incredibly strong, with one silk filament being stronger than a comparable steel filament.

How is silk created?

Here's a step-by-step guide to the fascinating process of silk production...

1. Horticulture

This is the term used to describe the process of collecting the materials by gathering the silkworms and harvesting the cocoon.

Female silkmoths can lay anywhere from 300 to 500 eggs at once. These eggs hatch into silkworm larvae, which are incubated in a controlled environment until they hatch (caterpillars).

To promote growth, the silkworms consume an enormous amount of mulberry leaves on a continuous basis. It takes about 6 weeks for them to reach their full potential (about 3 inches). They'll stop eating and start raising their heads at this point, indicating that they're ready to spin their cocoon.

The silkworm, attached to a secure frame or tree, will begin spinning its silk cocoon by rotating its body in a figure-8 movement around 300,000 times - a process that will take 3 to 8 days. Each silkworm produces only one strand of silk, which is about 100 meters long and held together by a natural gum called sericin.

2. Extraction of threads

Once the silkworms have spun their cocoon, they will eventually enclose themselves inside it, at which point the silk threads can be extracted.

The cocoons are submerged in boiling water to soften and dissolve the gum that holds the cocoon together. This is an important step in the silk production process because it ensures the continuity of each thread.

Each thread is carefully reeled from the cocoon in individual long threads before being wound on a reel. Some sericin may remain on the threads to protect the fibers during processing, but this is usually removed with soap and boiling water.

3. Coloration

After washing and degumming the silk threads, they will be bleached and dried before the dyeing process begins.

Traditional silk dyeing techniques use natural resources found in the surrounding environment, such as fruit or indigo plant leaves, to create the dyes. The threads will be soaked in bundles in a pot of boiling indigo leaves and water. This process will be repeated several times over the course of several days to ensure proper color tone and quality.

However, in the commercial manufacture of silk, these traditional dyeing methods have almost become extinct. Because of technological advancements, manufacturers now use various dyes such as acid dyes or reactive dyes. This provides a wider range of color and shade options to meet increased demand.

Having said that, the basic idea behind the technique remains the same, as the silk is immersed in a dye bath to absorb the color. The silk can be fed into the bath via two cylinders or attached to a round jig immersed in the bath.

In many cases, this will be one of the final steps of the process, as manufacturers increasingly prefer piece-dyeing to reduce waste. By keeping plain white stock ready to be dyed, it eliminates the need to keep too much stock in specific colors that were not ordered and may never be used.

Desde hace algún tiempo, aburrido de ir más o menos por los caminos de siempre, y gracias al GPS y a la colaboración de varios colegas de pedaleo, he intentado “recuperar” viejos caminos pistas y senderos por los que hace ni se sabe cuanto que pasamos. Años a…

Unos están cerrados por las zarzas o maleza que ha crecido porque no ha pasado nadie en mucho tiempo, otros están agrietados y deteriorados por el clima tan lluvioso que hemos tenido últimamente, y otros por las putas motos que destrozan todo a su paso, cuando abren gas a tope por tramos que están ya rotos, sin dejar que se recuperen mínimamente, con los consiguientes agujeros y charcazos tipo piscina olímpica que se forman.

Desde luego ya podían pasar por al lado y de esa manera abrir un nuevo paso alternativo en vez de reventarlo más… Si al menos nos oyeran…

El otro día me fui por Unbe y el Munarrikolanda, a ver que había. Fui con la bici y medio de pateo por el monte y lo cierto es que hay buenas bajadas medio escondidas que debiéramos de recuperar y no se si incluso marcar, lo único seria buscar alguna subida de retorno a la pista principal y poder seguir ruteando sin salir tan rápido a carretera… pero poco a poco. Algunas de esas bajadas son largos cortafuegos, anchos, llenos de pedruscos y con tramos de cierto desnivel. Otras son pistas anchas entre eucaliptos que mueren, pero hay otras que merece la pena rodarlas, abrirlas y recuperarlas.

Recientemente en un post de foromtb, estábamos comentando todas estas pequeñas variantes que tenemos por Uribe Kosta y alrededores y que a veces las tenemos tan cerca que ni nos damos cuenta. Poco a poco el mapa va creciendo, y espero poder crear un buen surtido de rutas, con diferentes alternativas.

Además, esto nos esta sirviendo también para unir a gente que anda desperdigada por la zona e ir saliendo mas gente junta, con lo cual, el ambiente va creciendo y mejorando.

De momento, la cosa avanza, y ya hemos pasado por caminos y pistas que hacia la tira de años que personalmente no veía, y es una satisfacción poder volver a pasar por allí y recordar viejos momentos y salidas que hacíamos.

Queda mucho monte por aquí cerca que “recuperar” y otro tanto que habrá que explorar.

Es cierto que hay otras tantas zonas que han sido devoradas por el cemento, pero hay variantes que las siguen uniendo de una u otra forma.

GPS Anticrisis

Haciendo limpieza del disco duro, ha aparecido una foto que me ha parecido graciosa.

Trafico

Recientemente ha salido una campaña de trafico en el cual se iban a intensificar los controles a todos los ciclistas que circulen por carretera, para que se cumplan las normas de llevar casco, y todas las reglas y normas de trafico. (no encuentro la noticia original, pero aqui hay un buen articulo. Me parece una campaña necesaria ya que muchos van de pros y no respetan estas normas, pese a que la mayor parte de ellos, por no decir la totalidad, dispondran de carnet de conducir y por tanto circularan tambien por las carreteras.

Yo soy de los "tontos" que paran en todos los semaforos, stops, cedas...y alguna vez he oido en la acera "mira Paco, un ciclista parado en un semaforo...". Y me jode que no veas.

Estamos tontos o que? Si circulamos por la carretera, las normas son las que hay y hay que respetarlas como todo cristo, coches, motos, camiones... como si es un burro tirando de un carro, luego por cuatro subnormales se nos tacha a todos los demas. Cada vez que veo a uno saltarse un semaforo, siempre le pego un grito, porque me jode que luego generalicen y no nos tomen en serio a los demas, y ojalá, le den un dia una buena ostia, para que espabile y que se quede en silla de ruedas, por gilipollas. Luego cuando pasan las cosas ya no vale llorar, menos aun si no has respetado las normas.

Y hay para todos carreteros, BBTeros y conductores de vehiculos a motor, aunque esta claro que queda mucho camino.

De todos modos, tambien hay coches que se pasan por el forro las normas de trafico, jugando en muchas ocasiones con nuestras vidas, pasando sin guardar las distancias de seguridad. Sin ir mas lejos el otro dia viniendo de Gerekiz, casi me tengo que salir a la cuneta porque un hijo de puta (siento la palabra, pero no tiene otro nombre), me cerró hasta casi tirarme. No tuvo huevos de parar, y menos mal, porque le hubiera caido "una mano de barniz".

Hay que ponerse en el lugar de ambos, pero hay que tener en cuenta que nuestra carroceria somos nosotros mismos, y un error de estos, nos deja fuera de combate facilmente.

Estan bien las campañas de trafico para recordar estas cosas y esta bien que metan "palos" y las multas las metan bien gordas, pero que sean para todos los que circulan por carretera !!!

Precaucion... amigo conductor...

A sus cada vez mas completas paginas web, con miles de datos tecnicos, fotos, multimedia... van añadiendo complementos para el usuario, y en esta ocasión a parte de los manuales tecnicos de mantenimiento, se trata de una serie de videos de mecanica.

360º Helmet cam

Sensacional el invento que se han currado en este video para sacar tomas desde diferentes angulos desde el casco sin tener que hacer ningun cambio de posicion manualmente a la camara. Va a sus anchas!!

El principal inconveniente que le veo es que en caso de caida, la ostia puede ser muy muy aparatosa... y segun lo que pese el artilugio, tambien sera incomodo de llevar si no es para un periodo muy corto de tiempo... pero bueno, todo no se puede pedir no?

 Acabo de ver dentro de las tipicas paginas que visito, un link a una foto un tanto especial. No se como la han sacado ni como han hecho el trabajo, pero el resultado, es curiosisimo, y fantastico. Me parece super original y se ve super bien.

Hay quien lleva botellin o el que prefiere camelback, y luego esta este que no se yo si llegara a casa de pie. Una cosa es darle al pedal y otra darle al pedal...



Y estos si que hacen downhill. Mientras unos nos debatimos que si tal freno de 185 o de 203, que si cuadro de carbono o titanio... ruedas de 26" o las novedosas 29"... naaaaadaaaaaaa, a tumba abierta con estas maquinas!!! Lo mejor es el freno de pedal que llevan.

Laser: Light Lane

A raiz de los ultimos acontecimientos, con varios accidentes por la zona, he encontrado otro de tantos inventos que se ven con la intencion de que todo aquel que por la circunstancia que sea, tenga que circular por la carretera de noche principalmente, sea lo mas visible posible.
